Istighfar — the door that never closes
The meaning and benefits of Astaghfirullah: why the Prophet ﷺ sought forgiveness 70+ times a day, what Sayyid al-Istighfar is, and how daily istighfar opens provision, relief and rain.

Astaghfirullah — “I seek Allah's forgiveness” — might be the most misunderstood phrase in a Muslim's vocabulary. It is not only for moments of sin. The Prophet ﷺ, forgiven entirely, still said:
“By Allah, I seek the forgiveness of Allah and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day.”
Istighfar is maintenance for the heart — the daily polish that keeps it soft, humble and close. And the Quran attaches worldly openings to it that surprise most people.
What istighfar opens
Prophet Nuh told his people that seeking forgiveness would bring far more than pardon:
“Seek forgiveness of your Lord — indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. He will send rain from the sky upon you in showers, and give you increase in wealth and children, and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers.”
Rain, provision, children, gardens, rivers — from one practice. Early scholars would prescribe istighfar for nearly every complaint: drought, poverty, childlessness. It is the believer's master key.
Sayyid al-Istighfar — the master supplication
The Prophet ﷺ singled out one formula as the master of seeking forgiveness: *Allahumma anta Rabbi, la ilaha illa ant, khalaqtani wa ana 'abduk…* — “O Allah, You are my Lord; there is no deity but You. You created me and I am Your slave, and I am upon Your covenant and promise as much as I am able…”
“Whoever says it during the day with firm conviction and dies that day before evening will be among the people of Paradise; and whoever says it at night with firm conviction and dies before morning will be among the people of Paradise.”

Making istighfar a daily count
- Set a simple daily target — the Prophet's ﷺ own 70–100 is the classic benchmark.
- Attach it to a dead-time anchor: the commute, the school run, washing up.
- Count it, so the practice is concrete — Astaghfirullah will have its own garden in gardeen, where every count grows something living.
- Once a day, slow down for one *felt* istighfar: name the shortcoming, feel the return.
